How to Repost an Instagram Post

You have two options when it comes to resharing an Instagram post. Your choice consists of where to send it – either to your Story or to your profile feed.

Repost an Instagram Post to Your Story

You can easily reshare a regular post to your Story on Instagram. This should work with any post from a public profile.

Note: you can repost only from your mobile device and not your PC.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your phone.
  2. Find the photo in question.
  3. Press the “Share” button (the paper plane) underneath the photo.

Repost an Instagram Post to Your Instagram Profile Feed

If you’ve spotted a nice piece of art or a beautiful photograph and would like to have it adorn your own profile feed, it’s possible to do so.

You can take a screenshot of the post, crop out the unimportant parts, then re-post it to your feed. You can usually do that on an Android device by pressing the Power and Level down buttons together. Some Android phones support other gestures such as swiping three fingers on the screen to obtain a screenshot. For iOS users, here’s how to screenshot your display.

Once you’ve uploaded the image to Instagram, common sense dictates that you tag the original poster in the caption, to avoid any possible copyright issues. To make absolutely sure they are OK with you using their content, it would be safer to send them a Direct message and ask for express permission to use their stuff.

How to Repost a Story on Instagram

Instagram also lets you repost other people’s Story to your profile, with some limitations. Fortunately, these can be circumvented quite easily, as you will see.

Repost an Instagram Story You’re Tagged In

You can easily repost other people’s Stories to your own Story if you were tagged in them. Note that the person who tagged you needs to have enabled the option to “Share Stories” via the app’s Privacy settings in order for you to do so.

  1. You should receive a notification on your phone when you’ve been tagged in a Story. You’ll also get an automatic Direct message from the person who tagged you letting you know you’ve been tagged. Tapping on the notification will take you directly to the message.
  1. In Direct, tap on the “Add to your story” button underneath the Story thumbnail. This button won’t be available if you’re viewing your Direct messages on Instagram on PC.

  1. A Story will be automatically generated featuring a snapshot of the Story in question. It shows the original poster at the top and your tag.

  1. You can continue editing the Story, or if you’re satisfied, press “Your story” at the bottom to post.

How to Repost an Instagram Story You’re Not Tagged In

What if you want to repost a Story in which you weren’t tagged to your Stories? While there’s no native feature allowing you to do s you can use a workaround to achieve the desired result.

  1. Go to the Story in question and take a screenshot of it, just like you did in the post section.

  1. Once you have the screenshot, create a new Story using the image. We don’t recommend cropping out the original poster’s account name (it shows up at the top), since you may be accused of copying original content, but you can remove the fluff from the image, such as the Instagram message box at the bottom and upper top of the image showing your phone’s notification area plus time/battery status.

How to Repost a Reel on Instagram

Unlike the case of Stories, you can repost almost any Reel to your Story by following the steps below.

Repost a Reel to Your Instagram Profile Feed

If you want to repost the Reel to your profile feed, you’ll have to use a workaround. The three options are detailed below.

Record Your Screen

Android has a built-in option that allows users to record their screens, as does iOS. You can use these native features to record the Reel, then use a video-editing app, such as InShot (Android | iOS), to crop out the unwanted parts, like the Instagram logo and app buttons.

Once you’re done editing, you can repost the video as your own Reel. We recommended leaving the original poster’s tag in the video. If you’d like the video to be clean, we suggest tagging them in the description.

Remix It

You can repost a Reel to your Instagram feed as another Reel by remixing it. This means you will repost the original video alongside your own video commentary which can be added alongside the original video or after. Refer to our guide on how to start remixing Reels on Instagram.

Use a Third-Party App

Alternatively, you can employ the help of a third-party app like Reposta (Android) or Reels Repost Reshare Story (iOS) to repost a Reel to your profile feed.

  1. Open a Reel on your mobile device.
  2. Press on the “More” option on the right.

Control Who Can View Your Instagram Reposts

Reposts act like regular posts in the sense that they will be visible to everyone with access to view your Stories or profile feed. If your profile is set to private, for example, the reposts will be visible only to your followers. If your profile is public, the repost will be accessible to almost anyone. Alternatively, depending on your privacy settings, Stories you share may not be available to every follower.

In some cases, you can hide Instagram reposts from certain followers. If you’re reposting to a Story, you can easily manage who sees a Story. Once the Story is posted, click on the three dots in the lower-right corner and select “Story settings -> Hide story from.” If you’re reposting to your feed, hiding the repost from some people won’t be possible.

Note that you don’t need to follow an account to be able to repost content from them. However, this account needs to be set to public for you to able to access their content.

Other Third-Party Reposting Apps

Apart from the apps we’ve already mentioned in this post, there are others that facilitate the process of sharing on Instagram. Here are a few that are worthy of mention.

  • Repost for Instagram by JaredCo (Android): lets you repost posts and Reels to your Stories or Profile Feed.
  • Reposter for Instagram (Android): lets you repost posts, Stories, and Reels to your Stories, Profile Feed, or Direct. You can also download content using this app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I repost videos on Instagram?

Some Reels don’t allow reposting because the original poster has disabled this option. This can be done by accessing the Reel in question, tapping on the three dots on the right, and selecting “Remixing -> Turn off remixing”. On the other hand, if you’re trying to repost a Reel using a third-party app, you might be dealing with a broken link, so try copying the link again and pasting it into the app. Check above to see how to repost a video on Instagram. If that still does not work, try a different approach. Apps like Reposta also offer the option to download the video. Try doing that first and then post the reel yourself. Don’t forget to give credit, where credit is due.

Why can’t I repost a post that I’m tagged in on Instagram?

If you followed our guide on how to share an Instagram post as Story and it didn’t do the trick, you might be dealing with an Instagram glitch. Try properly closing the app and then launching it again. If you can’t still see the option or the application freezes as you’re trying to do so, restart your device and update Instagram. As a last resort, you can screenshot the post and repost it, as explained in the guide above.

Why can’t people reshare my post on Instagram?

If you tweaked your privacy settings as explained above and forgot about it, it might be the reason why people can’t reshare your content on Instagram. Make sure you re-check your posts’ settings to check.

How do I remove reposted content from Instagram?

Knowing how to reshare a post on Instagram is useful, but what if you want to remove a repost from your profile? Simple, proceed as you would with a regular post. For Stories, press on the “More” button and select “Delete” at the top. For reposts on your feed, again, you’ll need to find the “More” button, which is available in the upper-right corner of the post, and select “Delete” from the menu that pops up.

Can I repost my own content?

Yes, you can, at least some of it. For instance, you can repost your Instagram posts as Stories using the same instructions detailed above. You can also repost a Story as Reel by using the “Create” button at the bottom of a Story.
